SEO or Google Ads? A Decision Guide for B2B Companies

SEO and Google Ads are different investment models. Decide using existing demand, a usable service page, permitted measurement and sales capacity. Ad spend does not purchase organic rankings, and neither channel fixes an unclear offer on its own.

Consider urgency alongside readiness

A short campaign window may justify evaluating paid search, but the service, landing page and enquiry path must be ready. Useful expertise content and accessible commercial pages support an ongoing organic presence. Clarify what a potential buyer searches for and which offer answers that intent, rather than selecting a channel only because it can be switched on.

Separate the budget components

Media spend, campaign management, landing pages and measurement setup are separate paid-search costs. SEO requires technical implementation, expert content and recurring review. Do not compare proposals using the monthly management fee alone. Check additional development and licences. A narrow service scope can be easier to evaluate than a broad plan with unclear attribution. Agree spending boundaries and review ownership.

Measure suitable enquiries

Review paid and organic enquiries for service, geography and project fit. Analytics events require relevant permission. Operational source information and sales notes can support enquiry handling. Record why initial conversations were suitable or unsuitable. Distinguish an acquisition problem from delayed sales follow-up; a click count alone cannot diagnose the difference.

Give each channel a role

Match landing pages to service intent instead of sending every visitor to a generic homepage. Organic guides can answer comparison questions; Search Ads can direct a defined audience to a scoped offer. Write down the hypothesis, approved spending boundary and review date before a test. Ask for evidence behind guaranteed customers or revenue. Deciding not to continue after a test is also a valid outcome.

Checklist before deciding

  • Are demand and service intent clear?
  • Are the landing page and sales follow-up ready?
  • Are media, management and development costs separated?
  • Are consent, a test hypothesis and review date defined?
